Description

Marlin R. Taylor first discovered musical recordings when he was elementary school-age, when they came from phonograph records that played at 78 revolutions-per-minute. This was just the prelude to his love affair with radio, which began at the end of World War Two when he received his very own AM-only radio. This marked the beginning of his “education” in how the industry functioned, knowledge that would serve him well through a career which began with a job at a small AM station. Then, following a U. S. Army tour which took him 750 miles above the Arctic Circle, he played a role in launching the first FM Stereo station in the Nation’s Capital. In 1963, he became the first employee of another new FM station, this one in Philadelphia … where his concept of the Beautiful Music format would be developed. By 1969, he would take on the management of a sick New York City FM station and lead it to a dramatic success … which led to his programming being heard on well over 100 stations across America. His career concluded with 15 years spent in satellite radio, where he was responsible for three very popular formats, including the Beautiful Music channel, which was launched in 2002. Marlin attributes his amazing success to his philosophy that, no matter what the situation, the Listener is #1!

I just wanted to drop a note and say that I finished reading your book. It was WONDERFUL!! I am delighted to know more about the man behind The Beautiful Music format that I have enjoyed since Childhood. Most of all, Thank You for taking the time to put your experiences in book for so that you could share them! I’d like to share two little ancedotes from when I was reading the book — #1, I can now say with 100% certainty that in the early 2000’s of listening to XM Radio’s Sunny Channel that the bleedle on the XM ID was indeed extracted from the Anita Kerr “WRFM – New York…….” Bonneville Vocal Spot. #2. I was listening to Jib on the Web while reading the book, and in the section where you were talking about Caravelli’s Wigwam, that exact song was played whilst I was reading that chapter.

Again, Marlin, Thank you for taking the time to put your experiences in book form! I enjoyed it thoroughly!

    All my best!
    Ray Davis
